I want to add information concerning this bug.

On my system (gentoo) there are also many messages "failed to store...".

One example is gunzip(1):

# apropos gunzip
gunzip: nothing appropriate.

# man -w gunzip
/usr/share/man/man1/gzip.1.bz2

I will also attach the log of `mandb --debug`.

I was looking through the posted log output (and my own, as I can reproduce this locally).  To the uninitiated, it appears as though man entries with a dot in the name fail in this way.  It is as if the process tries to interpret the portion after the dot as the subsection, and then confuses it with a man page of the similar name -- e.g., "journald.conf.d.5" fails to store because it believes "journald.conf.5" is the same entry.

The error that appears to be fatal is this, "ignoring differing compression extensions: <module>".  Every time it is encountered the entry fails.

Hopefully this is helpful analysis in some way...

I have sys-apps/man-db-2.8.5 on a Gentoo Linux system.

I'd like to update the man pages database with the "mandb" command, but I get lots of warning messages such as the following ones:

I haven't touched /etc/man_db.conf.
