About the <div>s based layout, some guy has advised just checkout the themes from a CMS like Drupal. It is said that the GNU Herds layout is pretty typical for them, and they're nearly all well written css-based websites.

You could take a look at the conclusion section of "Beware of XHTML" [1] and let us know what you think about it:

Warning: I am not sure if we should use "XHTML 1.0 Strict" instead of "HTML 4.01 Strict" to be able to use microformats.

To carry out the step (2), the below link could be useful:

Moving from "HTML 4.01 Transitional" to "HTML 4.01 Strict"

Steps to carry out:

  (1) Strip out markup that is designed to be used for
      presentation and replace it with CSS. It is pretty
      trivial.

  (2) Avoiding tables for layout is somewhat more work,
      but can wait until after the codbase is moved to
      "HTML 4.01 Strict". That is to say, after realizing
      the point (1).

A redesign based on <div> <fieldset> <label> etc. is too much work to be done for me know.  Maybe when the "HTML 4.01 Strict" or "XHTML 1.0 Strict" task be realized this will be one of the subtasks.

As nobody replies, I suppose nobody disagrees. Anyway, anybody can disagree at any time.

When we change the presentation layer (templates), besides check it with validator.w3.org, we should take a look at how the browsers render such change:

  * FireFox (Gecko based)
  * Konqueror (Safari Mac OS X is khtml based too)
  * Opera
  * IE

The HTML to XHTML will be a big change!.

Besides:
 Use <div> instead of <table>
 etc.

Note:
 Depending on the font size we get a color break in the
 heading. The cyclical-green-sky.png was a workaround.
