Hi All,

We will be releasing CERTI 3.2.6 soon.
We should ship the first HLA Tutorial with certi
with this CERTI release.
Jean-Yves will try a windows build.
Then I may try to create clean NSIS installer using CMake.
In fact, I did begin the CMakeLists.txt update
but this is not over [yet].

Hello,

I've seen that Eric made some changes yesterday.

I pull the task up to 100%.

Ok I think you are right.
I'm OK with the fact that the current code
may be considered as Tutorial V1.0
(may be after text review).

I pushed the task up to 80%.
You may put it to 100% and status Done
when you think your review is over.
We may open a new task for a more advanced tutorial
later.

You may (if you want) throw a message on CERTI mailing list
in order to call for volunteer for the review.
for those who are not monitoring this tracker.

Concerning task 6909, my wishes were to have
"almost" scriptable tests programs.
That is those programs should be "less" interactive.
That MY personnal opinion though.
We should discuss this beginning with your proposal.

Hi,

I will come to an end with the tutorial. I think the texts need some further reviews. I hope to finish this before christmas.
My further efforts will now concerned to task 6909.

So, the tutorial will only deal with the management areas fm, dm, and om. As Eric already said, the complexity should not be too high for a first start.

If there are any open wishes let me know.

I will make a proposal for task 6909 still before the end of this year. The testing federates have to deal with all management areas and difficult details of the HLA API. So, they can of course also serve as advanced tutorials for interested people.

I plan to use this tutorial as basis for task 6909. I want to add a second controllerFederate (PID controller) and something like a interactive GUI-based commander federate which can instantiate federates and control their behaviour.

But more on this later.

I added now the missing texts. Feel free to post me improvals.

As I already told I plan to use time management too. Indeed, it would increase the complexity of the tutorial. Do you think this is a good idea?

Perhaps it is better to write new time managed federates based on the old one and explain only the new necessary parts.

Something like an advanced HLA course :).

After I invoke the method
enableAsynchronousDelivery it works.

I already checked in the new tutorial sources.

But I think that this is not exactly conform to the standard.

When invoking the service, ro-messages may be delivered to
the federate during any invocation of tick(). BUt this affects
only time-constrained federates ,to all non-time-constraint federates all messages are always delivered asynchronously.

This is the reason, why the method enableAsynchronusDelivery
is referred to the time management services.

Federates which are not using time management should not be affected. They are on default neither time regulating nor time constrained.

So, the method enableAsynchonousDelivery should only affect federates with an enabled time-constrained flag.

This is only my opinion. But I think this is more conform to the HLA standard.

There has been changes in CERTI

May be Pierre can tell us in which circumstances
the change may impact HLA programs behaviour?

Hello,

I'm back, had a lot of work to do in the last weeks.

Today, I checked out the last certi sources and my last
cvs commit of the tutorial.

I compiled certi and then the tutorial code.

I can start the federates. But before they entering the sim-
loop the federates wait for a discoverObjectInstance callback.

Now it seems, that they never get one. So they hang up in the
test loop for the callback.

I know that this already worked correctly after my last cvs update. So the question is, where their some changes in certi
sources which can cause such a behaviour?

Guten Abend, bon soir :),

I will test it in the next days. But for the tutorial the receiveAttributeValues callback is the important one.

The problem is the following:

RAV and RI in CERTI behave, until now, like in HLA 1.0.

My programmers guide says the following:

RTI 1.0:

virtual void
RTI::FederateAmbassador::reflectAttributeValues (
  RTI::ObjectID theObject,
  const RTI::AttributeHandleValuePairSet& theAttributes,
  RTI::FederationTime theTime,
  const RTI::UserSuppliedTag theTag,
  RTI::EventRetractionHandle theHandle )
throw (
  ...
)

Nearly the same for RI.

In RTI 1.3 there are two overloaded methods, one with additional
time argument.

That's why the behaviour of RAV and IR are not wrong, but not conform to HLA 1.3.

As I saw in federateAmbServices.hh both overloaded methods for RI and RAV are already declared.

As I said, I can check this for IR in the next days. If you can also bug-fix the RAV federate service I can immediatly recompile the tutorial and check the changes.

bye

Salut :),

I advanced the "percent complete" value to 30% because
now we know who to do it.

In the next two weeks I plan to add the missing texts and to add time management functionality.

I think about an additional observer federate as also Eric announced in a previous mail. I plan to use qt4 for the gui.

I also plan to take the gui and the tutorial problem as a basis for a test federation ( my second item ).

A bientot et un beau week-end.

Ok fine,
I'm pleased you like the idea.

add automated doxygen generation.
I don't know exactly when I'll do it
but I'll keep you informed.

Thank you too for the tutorial work
I think it will be useful for many people.

Hello Eric,

I like it, yes!

I already tried to add a service explanation and everything works very well. I like your approach!

At first I thought to handle our problems at compile time is not the best way, I preferred a parsing approach at runtime. But now I'm convinced of it.

Because (you've already written it): Cross-platform problems don't occur and we know for sure the location of the sources. The next advantage is, that we have the whole text in one file. So additionally, data and output/displaying are separated in a good way.

My first considerations about parsing at runtime were concerned with changes in the sources. But probably no tutorial user would change the tutorial sources. So we can do the jobs of course at compile time.

Thanks for your efforts
Christian

I've just checked-in the idea of generating a header
file which contains the messages to be displayed during the run.

I think it's better this way because:

1) You don't have to look for (find -name ...)
   source file during the run.
   We do similar processing during compilation/CMake run
   during which you definitively HAVE the source files
   since you are compiling :=)

2) We may handle cross-platform issue using this file
   when we will try to compile the tutorial on non
   unix platform.

3) We may even imagine translation because
   almost all messages are in one file.

I added 3 files:
   * GenerateMessagesHeader.cmake which contains
     CMake Macros for doing the source pre-processing

   * DisplayServiceMessages.hh.in which is the
     unprocessed header file with some variables
     which will be replace by CMake
     when generating ...

   * DisplayServiceMessages.hh
     The generated header file which is included
     by DisplayServiceExplanation.cc

As of current CVS checked-in file you need to
re-rerun CMake in order re-generate the header.
I will add a dependency which will relaunch
the generation if controllerFederate.cc has changed.

Tell me if all this works for you and if you are OK
with the approach. If not do not hesitate to tell.

I think a solution
may be to package the sources inside
some archive (either zip or tar compressed archive)
then your program will load the archive in order
to find and display some of the content you need.
You may manipulate such an archive using
a multi-platform archive library like:

http://people.freebsd.org/~kientzle/libarchive/
http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/libarchive.htm

Note that some (if not all) of the command
line tools you currently use for linux/unix
may be found for Windows:
http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages.html

However I would say that the text to be displayed should be
either embedded into the code (don't know how for now)
or put in a single archive file you may distribute
along with the sources.
The location of the archive containing the necessary
ressource may be specified on command line or by an
environnement var.

>An alternative way is to hard code the source code snippets in

>especially if there are changes in the sources.

The explanation texts may be setup as
a set of C MACRO
the definition of those macros may be computed
at compile time using CMake.

Using this solution will essentially do
the same trick you do using system() call at
compile-time in order to generate a header
which defines the computed string to be displayed.

The interesting feature of the compile time approach
is that you may not need to use the SAME tool for
Unix and Windows platform.
The problem is reduced to how to generate the file
HLATutorial_help_text.hh
which should contain the MACRO definition for

DISP_TUTORIAL_INTRODUCTION_text
DISP_FEDERATION_MANAGEMENT_text
etc...

As a first thought I would say that a pure
python script should be able to generate the file.
I will try to set you an example in the CMakeLists.txt
today or tomorrow.

Moreover we may even put the generated file in the CVS
such that we only need to generate the header on unix
and distribute the resulting file.

I think Jean-Yves or Pierre may answer this question.

As a last remark.

Hello,

I'm glad to see that you find the tutorial useful. Thanks for
your bug-fix and the hints to run it on Solaris 10.

My next steps for this week are to add additional service explanations. If anyone have better proposals for the tutorial texts feel free to commit it or to correct it.

After that I want to add time management services.

But there are also open questions I've until now no good answers:
In the current version the file controllerFederate.cc have to lie in the home directory. So I can find it and parse the file to output some source code lines. This works under Unix/Linux, Windows won't work because I use Linux/Unix command line tools.

Of course the parsing can improved too, it was only a quick and dirty solution. But the main problems are:
Where to put the source file (introduce a shell variable, copy it to a fixed place, etc. ...)?
Which parsing tool should I use? I've very poor experiences with Windows, perhaps there are tools existing in both operating systems.
An alternative way is to hard code the source code snippets in the explanation texts. But I think this is not very useful, especially if there are changes in the sources.

It is also possible to add a txt-file which holds the explanation texts insteads to write it directly in the class DisplayServiceExplanations. So recompiling can be avoided when their are changes in the text.

The next points deal with the writing of federates, I also ask this at the CERTI-developer mailing list: Is it still required to join the federation like in the Billard class? I called it "spinning while joining"(while (!joined && nb > 0) {nb--;...).

The other point is concerning HLA API version. When the federates have only receive ordered attributes the callback RAV with five parameters is invoked. The time is then zero. I think this is HLA 1.0 compliant behaviour, not HLA 1.3 complinat behaviour.

So long,
Christian

Hello,
today I commited a version of the tutorial with
my ideas presented yesterday. Some explanations about Federate
Management services are shown while the execution of
the controllerFederate. The explanations are only proposals and probably not in a perfect English.

Source code lines from the controllerFederate.cc are also shown
while the execution of the federate. I know that the realization is very ugly because I use some UNIX/Linux command line tools (tail, head, awk, find, grep). I'll search for better solution. I played in the code today because you perhaps get a better idea of what I want to do in the tutorial.

To run the tutorial check out the current tutorial sources. Please guarantee that the current sources lie somewhere in your home directory (~/).

I should thought a bit about the idea
before commenting your display service idea.
However you may begin with your idea and we may
change/improve it later on.

Concerning the DMSO Programmer's Guide
I think you should check the copyright notice
before copy/paste or huge inspiration.

We have the same "trouble" with text/explanation
contained in the official standard (either HL1 1.3 or IEEE-1516-2000) those documents must be paid
so copying part of it brings questions we do not have
any answer yet...

Hello all,

as I announced I have thought about the interactive federates.

I would include two more files:
DisplayServiceExplanation.hh
DisplayServiceExplanation.cc.

Here a short extract from the .hh:

class DisplayServiceExplanation {

        public:

        /* Federation Management - RTI services */

        static void
        dispFederationManagement(void);

        static void
        dispCreateFederationExecution(void);
};

I would declare the methods as static because an
object instantiation is not required.

So I can call in the federates something like this:

DisplayServiceExplanation::dispCreateFederationExecution();

The implementation of the method
dispCreateFederationExecution could look like this:

void
DisplayServiceExplanation::dispCreateFederationExecution(void) {
  std::cout <<
        "Create Federation Execution. Some furhter explanations ... ."
        << std::endl;

/* At this place I would show the source code of the rti amb service. Using UNIX/Linux there are several possible
ways (system/exec->grep,sed,awk,...) but what is when
using Windows? Another problem arises too. I need to know
where the current sources are. Until now I've no really
good idea how to realize this. Perhaps the community have
some suggestions?
An alternative is to write
 try {
      createFederationExecution(parameters)
 }
  ...
to stdout. I think this is no good way.
*/

  std::cout << "Press any key to resume." << std::endl;
  char pressedKey;
  std::cin.get(pressedKey);
}

My last question for today :)
Does anybody know if I can use the explanation texts from
the Programmers Guide of the DMSO RTI?

I've no document where the standard is specified. Only the
Programmmers Guide.

in the HLA_Tutorial CVS module -any time-,
this way we may just cvs update to get your modifs.

I've applied the "flat" directory structured I proposed

Hi Christian,

I know you don't "need" CVS access but
we find it useful and easier to update.
Since it will be a "standalone" module
you may consider the module as a "working area"
until we (you, me, others...) find it ready
for prime time release.

I did get and applied your CERTI_TUTORIAL_update01.patch

but you seem to talk of another one?
Could you attach it?

To my own question, if time management is needed:
It's not a big problem to extend the tutorial code
with time management functionality. The question is
if this is appropriate for a first HLA tutorial or not.

I'm unsure because the usage of tm would increase
the complexity of the tutorial. On the other hand
tm is a very important HLA management area.

Hello Eric,

thanks for your proposals and I'll fully agree to that.

I need no direct cvs access, for me patch exchange
would be enough.

But perhaps you have to spare time so I could do the cvs
commit. It's your decision.

When you prepare the cvs module please apply the current
patch.

Here a little roadmap for my next changes:
First of all a question: Should time management be integral part of the tutorial? I'm unsure, because until now it is not really needed for the application example.

The next step is:
Interactive federates with a lot of console output which
explains the necessary rti ambassador calls in detail while
execution.

Christian Stenzel <approx>

Mon 22 Oct 2007 08:56:52 PM UTC, comment #4:

OK the example seems works fine for me.
There is some typo in doxygen comments.

I'll fix it soon and I will add doxygen documentation
generation to the CMakeLists.txt in order to
see the result of the doxygen output.

Regarding the name of the tutorial
I would propose to name it "HLA_Tutorial"
(because it may adapted to other RTI)
and as already told I'd rather begin with a
"flat" tree layout in order to minimize the number of
directories which are [not :(] CVS handled.
Here is my proposal layout:

   HLA_Tutorial/
    |-- CMakeLists.txt
    |-- COPYING
    |-- HLA_Tutorial_DESCRIPTION.txt
    |-- TwoLevelController.fed
    |-- controllerFederate.cc
    `-- processFederate.cc

This way we may create the "HLA_Tutorial" CVS module
and possibly create directory tree later if the tutorial
grows in size and/or complexity.

I'd rather do that because:

a) There will only one simple CMakeLists.txt

b) renaming directories is not
   easy with CVS unless you have direct access to the CVS
   server, and we don't.

If you are OK with that I may create the CVS module
and check-in last uploaded version of the files
with the name and layout proposed.

After that we may either exchange patches (if unsure)
or direct CVS commit.

Apply the patch to the latest sources of
CERTI_TUTORIAL-0.1.1-Source through invoking

Hi Christian,

Here comes my update .
As you will see I mostly simplify the CMakeLists.txt
to something that should be easier to understand.

The CMakeLists.txt includes CPack such that
"make package" will build a binary package
and
"make package_source" will build a source package.

I will add this kind of CMakeLists.txt example
to the CERTI distro in order to ease the building
of application using CERTI.

I did add comments inside the source code (of controlFed.cc)
I didn't have time to fully read and comment all the code
but I think this not necessary you are
on a good way :=).

However others may have a look too.

In order to make the collaboration easier
I think we may open the CVS module for CERTI_tutorial
such that we may exchange diff and not full archive.
For this time you'll find my new archive attached to
the tracker.

Since CVS is a real pain wtih directory we may
flatten the tree before we decide the directory structure.

More on that later.
