There are some really nice work done for upcoming debian, see http://wiki.debian.org/DebianDesktopArtworkSqueeze

Basically you have to first choose a beautiful photo, then edit it to different sizes and resolutions. Add some touches to it, make it appealing, do color adjustments ...

How do we plan to integrate it with all distributions?

We will have one package say malayalam-artwork with smc as an upstream. We can add this package to the popular distributions - anyone is free to add it on their own. It should be great if we can have the full set of artworks -- from splash screen to icons. In Debian we can add this package to malayalam-desktop package and it will be installed automatically if the user choses Malayalam during installation. Other distros should have similar mechanisms.
