This has been fixed in 94809d60.
Text Actors now always have the mode='flat' attribute.
You should no longer used the workaround suggested in https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/index.php?42166#comment1
and you will actually get an error if you do.

This is still a problem, but it can be circumvented specifying the mode in drawNumbers:

wireframe()
drawNumbers(coords,mode='smooth')
