That failure case is handled in spamc, not spamass-milter itself.  By default, spamc will pass messages through unaltered if it can't connect spamd.  If you add the -x flag, it will return a failure code instead, which should cause spamass-milter to return a tempfail error code.

So your spamass-milter commandline would be something like:

spamass-milter -r 40 -i -- -x

(note the "--" between milter options and spamc options)

Is there any way a feature can be added that causes spamass-milter to return a 4xx error message (termporary failure) when it can't connect to the SPAMD process?  This way, if there is a problem with the SPAM filter, all e-mail is effectively "paused" while I can reboot SPAMD, and no SPAMs will get through?
