At the moment VMTK is used by executing commands within a pyFormex script (vmtk_itf), thus as an external.
However, a faster and more powerful way of using VMTK would be to import the vmtk classes in pyFormex. How to do this is demonstrated in the attached example vmtkimportHOWTO.py
I think we should change the pyformex plugin vmtk_itf.py in order to import vmtk. A.o., this will also avoid writing and reading temporary files (tmp.stl, tmp.dat,tmp.csv etc.).
I would propose that Francesco takes the lead for this task.
